For the past 50 years, the Chevy Impala has experienced a level of success unmatched by any other full-size vehicle, assuming the title of America's favorite automobile. Not long after its inception in 1958, the Impala became the top selling car in the U.S., peaking at over 1 million units sold in 1965 -- a record that still stands today. Discontinued and resurrected numerous times, the Impala is once again one of the best selling American cars, and #1 in its class. Perhaps a true sign of the Impala's omnipresence is its influence on the NASCAR circuit, where the likes of Jimmy Johnson and Dale Jr. have helped make Chevrolet the winningest team in the history of the sport. For the past half-century the Impala has been a mainstay in American culture, making it a living legend of sorts. This site is devoted to providing information on all things Impala, from sales to auto parts to car reviews. We even like the African animal after which it is named, and we have a page on that too.
PRE-HISTORY
Long before Chevrolet unveiled its newest full-size vehicle in 1958, the original Impala had been roaming the African grasslands for eons. Aepyeros melampus, a close relative to the antelope and the gazelle, is one of Africa's most elegant creatures, and has the athleticism to match Carl Lewis in speed and leaping ability. It was thus prophetic that Chevy chose to name its most promising full-size autombile after the majestic beast, as the Impala quickly set the standard for performance from a luxury car. Indeed from its early days as a Classic to its current form as NASCAR champion, the Impala has evolved into America's most prolific vehcile. While historians suggest that God himself came down from the heavens to personally deliver the Impala, some skeptics still remain doubtful of its origins. No matter how the Impala came to be, though, Americans have been careful not to look this gift horse in the mouth. Instead they have embraced it with open arms, making it the best selling car of the '60s and '70s, and one of the most successful automobiles of all time.
